I don’t need to get into all the details because how could you not know all the details already? Let’s just leave it at this: Chick-FIl-A has notoriously donated to anti-LGBTQ groups in the past and even when they say they’ve stopped, which happens all the time, the religious right still finds a way to signal to narrow-minded chicken enthusiasts that portions of their chicken sandwich purchases will go to groups built to tear down the lives of other human beings. It’s way more insidious than, say, when Grace and Frankie went to Chili’s. This Chick-Fil-A moment signals way more than just a quick bit of possible product placement. The southern teens love Chick-Fil-A! But should they? So when Blair (Anjelica Bette Fellini) goes on a quick Chick-Fil-A tangent during a bit of fast-paced twin talk with her sister Sterling (Maddie Phillips), it makes sense.
Chick-Fil-A got me through college-which was easy since there was one on campus. I know I hoarded the barbecue sauce, too. Y’all, the south loves Chick-Fil-A-and with good reason, if we’re strictly talking about the quality of the food! The chicken nuggets are fluffy and crispy and the waffle fries can’t be beat. The McMansions, the “cool” Christianity, the hunting trucks, the passive-aggressiveness, the Sunday morning scramble to get to church-even the overeager, extracurricular crusade Blair and Sterling have against cigarettes is something that I recognize from my own Southern Baptist teen years.
If you’re from the south ( raises hand), little things ring true in every episode.
Unlike all the other shows and movies that set up shop in the Atlanta area, Netflix’s newest teen action/comedy is actually set in Georgia-and lord, does it show! Teenage Bounty Hunters is a southern show, y’all-and not just because it films in Georgia.
